COLONIAL REVIVAL IN CONNECTICUT GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT

Celebrating Diwali with @sabyasachiofficial at the @metmuseum - Louis Comfort Tiffany would be so happy that a peacock was enjoying his columns from Laurelton Hall again 🦚

Excited to step into designer Jonathan Adler’s new beacon of glamour on the Upper East Side!
It’s just what New York needed - a laboratory of stripes, snakes and fantasies.
Impossible not to smile and impossible to not take something home - especially one of the archival pieces of pottery made and signed by Jonathan himself.

Jonathan Adler is a man after my own heart 💜

King Francis of Assisi had his priorities in check. Instead of worrying about his wife, or bothering with producing heirs (other people *probably* took care of that) he was ordering beautiful things for the palace in Madrid, including this set of bed hangings and the many, many tassels and trims.
The incredible condition and luminosity of the colors makes them appear to have never been installed…
Commissioned in 1850 - and given the complexity of the embroidery, and the transit from China to Spain - they might not have arrived at the right moment. Isabella’s lack of charm and major political unrest meant it was time for them to head to France in the 1860s (forced to abdicate the throne). So I assume these stayed packed away, waiting for us to enjoy.
All a hypothesis, we might not ever know as after the delightful docent - imagine Spanish Toni Collette - attempted to send to me to Museum Jail she smugly told me to “read the sign” when I asked about their history.

So here that is,

‘In 1850 an order was placed in China on behalf of King Francis of Assisi (1822-1902) to embroider a set of bed hangings and associated trimmings. The order came via an individual named José Vicente Jorge, who was in-structed to commission the work specifically from the merchant Linhing and to have it embroidered on white, Nanking silk satin, known as Jaissam. It was to depict the most beautiful birds and flowers with regard to both form and colour, with perfect accuracy and lifelikeness, and to include no fictional elements or any depictions of human figures, quadrupeds, houses or boats. The set was completed with a large quantity of trimmings, of which one example is displayed here.’

There’s an obvious beauty to the @palaciodeliria but what I think is more interesting are the choices the (fabulous) Duchess of Alba made as she continued the reconstruction of her family home.
From the cast bronze peacock light switches (are you kidding me??), to the many urns and vases that serve as uplights, and the more personal moments like the little Harlequin figure on a gilded bracket in the Salon Espanol.
The current exhibition is on the Duchess herself - we get to see the 1960s sketches for the murals in her dressing room (I really hope they are still upstairs) to a childhood portrait with her favorite toys (which are about as Goya-esque as something like this could be) and the last two photos showing both her elegance and her spirit. I love her.

And so fun getting to share the visit with both 💜 @jbrhodes00 and a true arbiter of style - much like the Duchess - @laurawillsnyc

‘Weaving Courtly Life’ at @galeriacoleccionesreales was incredible and there couldn’t have been a better way to start the exhibtion than a cavalcade of insane curtain panels each trimmed more beautifully than the next. Hard to pick a favorite…

Flowers on flowers on flowers?
Crocheted Chinoiserie fantasy?
Ancient Greco-Roman? (Top marks as they even made two versions of the same tape for vertical and horizontal directions)
Embroidered dragons with forked tongues clutching Etruscan urns?
Or something simple and restrained like this green and pink galon with fringe?

Impossible to choose… but the little parasol shaped drops were hard not to obsess *slightly more* over ✨☂️🐉✨

“So we’re going to need four 8’ metallic gold palm trees that light up for a disco in Greenwich.”
“Ok, perfect, what if we put them in mirrored tole planters?”
“Wonderful, thanks!”

The conversation wasn’t exactly that simple, but close! Always fantastic to work with @straydogdesigns - these are truly masterpieces and couldn’t have come out better for one of the coolest spaces and coolest clients I am lucky to work with!

Scheming a sunroom for a new home on Deer Isle - the walls covered in @watts1874 ‘Goose’ (so excited to finally get to use this amazing paper) with a mix of favorites from @namaysamay @prelle_cie @robertkime - and of course some fringe @samuelandsons

So many favorite things made by favorite people in one photo - and so, so, so many @liveauctioneers finds - which makes sense, since it’s my side of the bed.
The bedside tables which I found at @doylenewyork were a happy accident, they fit perfectly (after I had the baseboard cut out on either side of the bed). The Neogrec oil lamps have @lisalampshadelady blue silk shades, which give off the most magical light and illuminate our other cat (who is made of porcelain) by the amazing @bethkatleman - he is perennially enticed by one of our (many) gay birds gifted to us by @bates.molly perched on top of the cloisonné charger.
We sleep surrounded by custom panels of @surfacesbydavidbonk and our mural by @jodymorlock which you can glimpse at left - and on @les_indiennes and @cqc.la bedding.
And the last thing I see before falling asleep (next to @jbrhodes00 💜) are our fabulous @marble_paper_scissors papyrus finials on our bed - modeled after an ancient barge finial at the @metmuseum

Finally, finally, finally purchased a piece of @mark_gagnon ✨🖤🏹✨
Happened into the fantastic @krbnyc and knew I had to take one home… tempted by skeletons, flies and devils… but the handsome (understatement, I’ve left him clothed in his chartreuse tissue paper) constellation archer was the obvious choice.
The first of many I’m sure - go get one before I go buy more!

Second photo shows the archer in the windows of @bergdorfs - and then where we fell in love, the walls of KRB!

It takes so many wonderful old parts (and a few new) to make a room feel like it’s always been that way.
Here the combination of a fantastic early 19th century chandelier from @yewtreehouseantiques paired with our client’s favorite @brunschwigfils paper set the tone right from the beginning (even if Craig is giving the fab chandelier a very critical glance — a reminder that it’s always great to try things on approval).
The 19th century French marble mantel followed, and the added texture of a @surfacesbydavidbonk paper below the chair rail along with marbelized baseboards really tied all together.
Not to mention the perfect pair of Sevres vases, the most insane Indian alabaster tazza from @brunkauctions and the custom @gainsboroughweaving damask on the backs of the chairs
