The most beautiful bedroom in Greenwich - thanks to @graciestudio and @kroeger_intinarelli_architects

The ceilings were relatively low in this area of the house, so Craig and Brian suggested borrowing a little space from the attic, resulting in this amazing barrel vaulted ceiling - which left us no choice but to cover the entire room in Gracie!

A pair of Jacob chairs are upholstered in Fortuny (one of those samples that never left the scheme, but only found a home at the very end) and a Colefax silk - paired with a fantastic commode purchased through Christie’s and a giltwood mirror from @geraldblandinc

A Wyeth hangs above the fireplace and is flanked by a pair of dreamy Caldwell sconces with antique jade plaques - and the perfect @lisalampshadelady shades. Not to mention the knockout flowers by @mieketenhave

ANTHOLOGY!
So excited to have one of the final projects I led for @jaynedesignstudio featured in this first issue of @homesandgardensanthology

With the architectural expertise of @kroeger_intinarelli_architects we helped this Colonial Revival house in Greenwich find its way back to the 1920s.

In the library, the 17th century Italian mantel is from @jamb_london and the walls are covered in a @flora.roberts wall covering. The curtains - one of the first elements of the project - are by @jeanmonroprints

The occasional furniture in the room came from a group of favorite go-tos like @nickbrockandcompany @howelondon @krbnyc @stairgalleries

There’s something wondertul about a garden seat - a fixation of mine that has grown over the last decade. Rich glazes, extraordinary patterns, fantastical shapes: from elegant Chinese barrels to kitschy Egyptian Revival princesses, their appeal is as broad as its specific
They possess an ephemeral quality. It’s easy to imagine a garden party gone awry and, before you know it, your yellow Minton stool is in pieces and someone is being summoned to staple it back together. Yet that very fragility is part of what I find so appealing. There is something remarkable about an object made for such polite utility - relatively delicate, all
things considered - that has nevertheless survived.
I’m not the only one drawn to them. Madeleine Castaing used Victorian stools in her interiors; Cecil Beaton kept Chinese stools in his conservatory; Joan Stacke Graham even built foor to ceiling bookcases in her apartment to display hers. Today, artists such as Reinaldo Sanguino continue the tradition, making fantastical graffiti and luster glazed stools.
In our Chelsea studio, we have seven, from a pair of 18th century Chinese stools to 1830s Mason’s Ironstone and Victorian majolica. I don’t believe in limitations. Some might
think you cant have more than one - or in my case seven - in a room, but I’m here to prove them wrong, alongside clients who share my passion and are invariably thrilled when an email arrives with the subject line: ‘The perfect garden seat.’

The incredible 5th century BCE Temple of Segesta meets the 2nd century CE Farnese Antinous - which the AMAZING @hilaryjane.has.add transformed into my new favorite article of clothing.

The temple was built in the early 400s and never completed - and never disturbed (aside from obnoxious photo shoots like this).
Any of Sicily’s monarchs practiced major restraint, because I would have certainly claimed this and created my own Doric palace.

There are too many things to obsess over at Palazzina Cinese - so I refuse to restrain myself! (Much like when I hissed at one of the guests who interrupted our private visit - we had the Palazzina to ourselves for well over 30 minutes.)
But also promise this is it… for a while.

The polygonal lantern in the dining room - makes you think Fortuny had to of stopped by - which is framed by the most insane column screen - I mean scales???

The aptly dubbed (by @bethkatleman - so don’t come for me) “pop sickle stick” furniture which I have had photos saved of for well over a decade dreaming about the day I could see - and then find someone to make similar pieces for…

Ferdinand’s bedroom - an absolute dream down to the snake stools and tinsel fringe - I am obviously a fan - aside from the whole twin-size situation

The inability to resist a trompe l’oeil tinted ceiling - I didn’t fully count, but there had to be about 30.

These very obedient little dragons… could they be better? Well… there isn’t any glitter, so I guess they could.

And lastly, Maria Carolina’s Turkish Room. Not a huge fan of the colors (love the saffron but why the pale blue when we could have really gone with it with hot pink, fushcia, mauve? - as loved by Beth’s outfit!)

More Palazzina Cinese - because that’s exactly what it’s about - more, more, more.

The facade is a combination of fully realized and sculpted forms - like thee amazing towers in the first few images - combined with trompe l’oeil painted murals of lattice, tented awnings, and even a number of dragons and orobourous that parade across the facade.
The result is completely ridiculous and totally perfect.

It is even more fantastical in person and all I can manage at the moment are some of the amazing ceilings.

Palazzina Cinese was originally designed in 1799 by Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia for another client, but when Ferdinand and Maria Carolina were deposed to Sicily from Naples, naturally they claimed the Chinoiseire fantasy for themselves. Alterations were made and all was complete by 1806. Lucky them (at least for the moment)

Somehow we managed to miss the Owen Jones chair I knew was around somewhere - and then we realized we also managed to miss the ‘Gothic Room’…

@martinplevy to the rescue who connected us with @clagulli who is the director and curator of Palazzo Butera. The palazzo has been restored by - and improved with - the artistic vision of Massimo and Francesca Valsechhi to display their staggering collection.

We returned yesterday to meet Claudio to see this set of rooms (which are arranged by appointment).
It was hard to not run directly to the ‘Gothic Room’ which is of course the last in the group.
Lost panels were replaced with colored mirrored glass (impossible to describe) by artists Anne and Patrick Poirier. These are framed by original faux marble panels under glass, all in a greater composition of Gothic and Norman arches and panels of faux porphyry.

And then there was the Owen Jones chair, last slide. Oh - and the side chair behind it is one of the original dining chairs from the Peacock Room. Yes the Thomas Jeckyll x Whistler room - and yes they have the entire set.

@palazzobutera is not to be missed, it has been one of the highlights of our trip to Italy.

A dream come true this morning to see the spectacular mosaics in the Sala di Ruggero, a 12th century masterpiece depicting the Genoard - ‘Paradise Garden’ - where leopards and peacocks live happily together under palm trees, against a shimmering background of gold glass tesserae.
(and not to take any credit… but the creation of the mosaics are attributed to both the reign of William I and William II)
